Empowered for Employment

Are you passionate about supporting women?

United Way WA are currently recruiting Volunteer Mentors to support women who have experienced family and domestic violence prepare to enter or re-enter employment. It is a program tailored to individual needs and includes both group sessions and individual mentoring to give women all the tools they need to change their circumstances.

About the program

Empowered for Employment is a highly structured program, which may suit those who are new to mentoring or unfamiliar with the issues faced by women who have experienced family and domestic violence.

Participants will have first been involved in a 4-week job readiness program, during which they will have developed a clear understanding of their goals, their strengths and where they need further support.

Based on this plan, you would negotiate with your mentee on how you might be able to support her over the three-month mentoring relationship.

This program supports women to:

  • Determine an employment pathway
  • Develop strategies and identify resources to help manage employment barriers
  • Develop strategies to manage stressors and challenges in finding employment
  • Establish a network of social support and psychological resources
  • Strengthen job seeking skills and resources

Mentors are a key element to the success of this program. For example, a mentee may find it helpful for a mentor to practice interview skills with her or she may require advice on how to establish a network to assist in job seeking. Your role would be clearly defined around manageable and specific activities that would work towards your mentee’s goals.

How it works

1. Participants attend 4 weeks of training exercises to develop goals for the program.

    • Week 1 – Program introduction and goal setting
    • Week 2 – Addressing negative thoughts, identifying skills, knowledge and resources
    • Week 3 – Assessing work on goals and skills, confidence building
    • Week 4 – Communication exercises and creating a support plan

2. Participants spend an additional session on understanding what mentoring is, how it can help and identifying what they need in a mentor.

3. Participants are matched with a mentor who meets with them on a regular basis for three months as they work towards the goals they set in the first part of the program.

To be successful in this role it is essential you:

  • Are over 18 years old
  • Are eligible to live and work in Australia
  • Are friendly, approachable and have good communication skills
  • Are responsible and able to manage your time well
  • Have an extensive current or recent workforce experience
  • Hold some understanding or willingness to learn about the issues facing women who have experienced family and domestic violence
  • Have capacity to provide face to face mentoring on a regular basis, supported by a mix of touch points including phone and email for up to three months
  • Have good communication skills
  • Attend an Induction and Training Session
  • Provide two Professional References
  • Are eligible for a national Police Clearance (at our cost)
  • Are willing to obtain a National Police Clearance
