Education is the foundation of any successful and vibrant community. And yet children who grow up in a situation of entrenched disadvantage are likely to fall far behind in the literacy skills needed for a successful schooling experience.

MEET THE SPEAKERS
With a career as a medical practitioner spanning over 46 years, Dr Hart has an impressive list of accolades and extensive experience across early childhood development and health. He is currently an Adjunct Clinical Associate Professor at WAHPA, member of the Alliance for Future Health Inc, Board Member for Wellbeing in Schools Australia and Board Director of Puntukurnu Aboriginal Medical Services.
Dr Mark Boyes, a Senior Research Fellow in the School of Psychology at Curtin University, leads the socio-emotional research being conducted in the ‘Language and Literacy in Young People Research Group’- an interdisciplinary group of researchers and practitioners interested in the development and impact of language and literacy difficulties in children and adolescents. A current focus of the research being conducted by this team is the impact of poor reading on the mental health and resilience of children and the identification of potential intervention strategies.
Dr Mary Claessen is an academic researcher and lecturer as well as an experienced Speech Pathologist. She has extensive clinical experience working in language development centres, and in collaboration with primary schools and educators as well as parents. She is driven by the desire to improve outcomes for children with language and literacy difficulties. She co-leads the Language and Literacy in Young People research group at Curtin University, which includes a large number of past and present research students. Her program of research investigates theory, assessment and interventions/programs for children with developmental language disorders and reading difficulties.
Justine has been the Community Impact Manager at United Way WA for the past 12 years. Working in partnership with families of children in care, through previous roles as an Anti-Bias trainer and at Parkervillle Children’s Home, helped develop Justine’s passion to empower all parents to be the primary prevention agents for their own children. Her career has focused on improving outcomes for children and young people in disadvantaged circumstances. This foundation has informed the United Way WA Community Impact Strategy.
