Empowered for Employment Fundraising Event

Empowered for Employment Fundraiser Event

We at United Way WA are beyond privileged and honoured to celebrate another year of our Empowered for Employment Program, providing pathways for survivors of Family Domestic Violence towards future employment. It was an amazing night, and we’d like to say a huge thank you to all the lovely people who attended and raised a whopping $6,100 to support our program.

Our speakers for the evening were Tania Cecconi, CEO at CEOs for Gender Equity, Robyn Westgate, Domestic Violence Consultant and Justine Roberts, Community Impact Manager UWWA. Tania, spoke about how CEO’s can initiate the discussion of gender equity and how they can implement policies in their workplace, to create a safe environment for those that experience Domestic Violence.

Robyn’s speech was emotive, powerful, and engaging, as she spoke about her first-hand account of facing domestic violence and the effects that it has on her until this day. Robyn is a highly qualified, skilled researcher, educator, and trainer with a clear history of experience working with disadvantaged women. Robyn spoke about how she still faced certain challenges long after the abusive relationship ended.

Justine spoke about how the women in the program often rated and saw themselves so negatively and how amazing it was to see their personalities breakthrough, slowly over time. Justine compared this experience (which would normally be described as an onion losing its layers) to a pomegranate revealing its jewel’s beneath the tough exterior.

We then went on to hear from some brave participants and volunteer mentors from the program, who described how transformational the process had been for them. How they had found and maintained employment, and had dared to dream and apply for positions they would have never considered in their former lives.

We would like to thank our mentors that make this program possible, the speakers who bravely told their stories, our volunteers, and our wonderful sponsor, Novata solutions for this incredible event.
