BUDDY WALK Sunday 12th October 2008
Down Syndrome WA is holding its first Buddy Walk this October, and we invite you, your colleagues, family and friends to take part in this great event. Buddy Walks will be held in a number of locations around Australia. If you live in rural or regional WA, why not organise a Walk in your area?
Buddy Walk was established in 1995 in the USA by the National Down Syndrome Society to celebrate Down Syndrome Awareness Month in October. Buddy Walk has grown from 17 walks in 1995 to more than 260 in 2007 across the US and around the world. More than 1.5m people have taken part since 1995.
Buddy Walk has three primary goals: · To promote acceptance and inclusion of people with Down syndrome; · To raise funds for a range of programs to make a difference for people with Down syndrome and their families; · To enhance the position of the Down syndrome community, enabling us to positively influence local and national policy and practice.
Our Buddy Walk in Perth will be from the Belltower to Matilda Bay, followed by a Family Fun Day. Put the date in your diary and start collecting sponsors now. Ask as many people as you want to join you on the day or sponsor your walk.
The walk will be followed by:
FAMILY FUN DAY 11am to 2pm Hackett Drive, Matilda Bay, Nedlands (Mounts Bay Rd end)
Entertainment will be fenced off and will include a Bouncy Castle, Fire Engine Fun, Animal Farm, music, dancing and much more. There will be food vans selling food and drink and there will be Down Syndrome WA merchandise for sale.

BIG BOSS BEAVER Big Boss Beaver is a collection of musicians who have focused their music on 30’s to 50’s "jump" blues covers. The band has played together for many years with the current line up as follows; Dr. Richard Beaver: guitar, steel guitar, harp, vocals. Dr. David Joske :guitar, vocals. Mike Wiese : sax. Ian James : drums. Robin Baird: bass. Dr. David Joske and Robin Baird are board members of SolarisCare. David is also the founder and chairman for SolarisCare.
THE SHADOW MEN Cliff & The Shadows were the quintessential entertainers in the Rock & Roll era of the British music scene. The Shadow Men are a tribute to the sound of that era. Made up of local musicians, who together have over 50 years of Shadows music experience among them, ranging from playing in local bands of the 60s & 70s like ‘Glen Ingram’s Hi-Five’, ‘Pendulum’, ‘Shades’, and ‘Reflections’, to today’s music of the ever popular band ‘Word of Mouth’. The Shadow Men are: Mike Bush & Pieter La’Brooy on lead guitars (to get that ‘Hank’ sound), Dave Maunders on rhythm guitar, Richard Smith on bass guitar, Michael Truran on keyboards, and Ray Thomas on drums, and our very own Ron Fisher giving his own tribute to ‘Cliff’, all coming together as ‘Rich Cliffard and The Shadowmen’.
HYBRID Hybrid is an eclectic group of musicians, bought together in 2003. Their focus has been on writing and recording new music in a private studio. The 5 original members – Robin Baird (ex Sonics), Justin Birchmore, Mark McEntee (The Divinyls), Jess Padman and Nigel Shaw (ex "Gerry & the Atrix" ) – have developed over 40 pieces, including 20 arrangements that form the basis of an unscripted "Operatic Song Cycle"; the story of which is evolving from the music. Over the years, this line-up has been augmented with contributions by Pieter La’Brooy (ex "Hi-Five", "Tollmen" etc), Tim Sharp (ex "Gerry & the Atrix"), James Fielder and Rod Christian (writer of the hit musical "Cruisin"). In performance mode, "Hybrid" focuses on charity events, bringing to audiences of all ages, a mix of original songs and classic rock covers.
